engineering firms. These firms employ over 48 000 individuals including professional
engineers, technologists and support staff. The industry contributes over $1.2 billion
annually to the Alberta economy.
The engineering industry is strategically important in developing and transferring
technology for the use and benefit of society. CEA’s role is to promote and enhance
the business interests and opportunities of CEA members. CEA and partner associations

Acrodex receives NRC-ASTECH award for Innovation in Industrial Research
December 5, 2003 – Edmonton, Alberta - Acrodex, provider of technology driven business
solutions, has been awarded the 2003 NRC/ASTech Innovation in Industrial Research Prize.
Presented by the Alberta Science and Technology (ASTech) Leadership Foundation, this award
honours businesses that have made a significant contribution to the science and technology
community in Alberta.
The award-winning technology is judged on its sophistication, industrial applications,
prospective commercial benefits, and its potential to impact Alberta. Acrodex's web-based
suite of software, Arcspan™, was recognized for its capability to help organizations better
manage all aspects of their service delivery by automating core business processes and
integrating them internally and with clients, suppliers and partners.
"Acrodex has built its success on fundamental attributes like hands-on involvement,
market intimacy, speed and agility," says Salma Rajwani, CIO of Acrodex. "Most importantly,
we believe in exercising the courage to think big and the drive to tread in uncharted
territory. Successful organizations need strength and resilience to think beyond today's
solutions to anticipate upcoming market needs. Our spirit of innovation and the supportive
environment in Alberta for science and technology research have helped us achieve a
significant technical solution for Alberta business."
The Innovation in Industrial Research award is presented not only based on a business'
innovative capability, but also on its experience and technical maturity in furthering the
commercialization of sophisticated technology. Award recipients are selected by an independent
panel of judges composed of professionals from the advanced technology, research and business
communities. The prize is sponsored by the National Research Council of Canada, Industrial
Research Assistance Program (IRAP).
Since early research and development starting in 1997, Arcspan has been developed into a
full suite of business management applications that ranks among the top 25 products in
the professional services automation sector. The product is now in the first stage of
commercialization. Microsoft Corporation has recently approached Acrodex to partner
with them to determine how to integrate Arcspan into Microsoft's new customer relationship
management (CRM) product.
